How To Destroy Cds With Sensitive Data
Afterwards archiving business and personal stuff for years I've got a box full of backups, music and data on CD'southward and DVD'south. I'm reluctant to just dump them in the trash and would like to render them unreadable. What's the like shooting fish in a barrel fast way to disable/destroy them? Some of the obvious ways like breaking and hammering them leads to little pieces of sharp plastic everywhere, which I'd rather avoid. |
Get a paper shredder that's approved for CD\dvd's. You should exist able to notice one at your local staples. Yeah, the slivers are dangerous but a expert paper shredder should collect all the pieces for you. |
Put the lot into a microwave oven you don't care much about. |
If you're just trying to discourage vague marvel from passers-by (equally opposed to having seriously secure stuff you suspect people are actively trying to become at), snap them in half and call it a day. Do you lot take a vice and a saw? Yous could cut a deep notch into a stack of them at a time. |
Become a paper shredder that'southward approved for CD\dvd's. You lot should be able to find one at your local staples. Yeah, the slivers are dangerous only a good newspaper shredder should collect all the pieces for you. This, though do note that it won't be a super fast process as affordable shredders have a low duty charge per unit for media, I think our $70 shredder can practise 3 a infinitesimal with fifteen minutes between runs for the motor to cool downward. The advantage is you can shred all the personalized junkmail, credit card checks, etc that you go that can be an identity thief's all-time friend. |
1. Invert the top half of a CD block box spindle, and stack the CDs in information technology. Note that the CD cake box is likely to suffer collateral damage, and you may not be able to use information technology again for this (or whatsoever) purpose. However, it will about certainly incorporate the CD shards that will issue. |
the winnah: place disks in a cakebox. Drill 4 1/four" holes in the top and the bottom of the container. Quick, no mess and I get to employ ability tools. The NSA *may* be able to reconstruct files simply I figure they've got backups anyway. |
Doesn't that just get in and then you tin't read certain files? Seems like you'd all the same be able to recover some of the data. I like snapping the disc in half to deter the casual data-thief and cooking them in a microwave if you are the paranoid sort. |
Orbital battery. |
Quote: Doesn't that just make information technology then y'all tin can't read certain files? Good luck trying to spin upwards such an unbalanced disc to actually read it... |
Quote: Doesn't that just arrive then you can't read sure files Well the only style to be sure is to nuke them from orbit The drill chews 'em upwardly pretty skillful inside the cake box, it doesn't drill clean holes. It looks similar they've been stuck in a blender most. |
I've always been fond of a practiced ol' ice pick. jab a dial of holes, pretend you lot're shiving a stoolie, good fun all effectually. As well useful for USB's that've stopped working correctly. Lovely tech-rage therapy. In a compression, heavy duty scissors or tin snips work wonders. Those both of these methods deal meliorate with a small number of disks, the pair of scissors/sheers/snips isn't bad for larger numbers. (Destroyed a off-white amount for the aunt when she was going through some sometime ish legal stuff. ) |
Personally I like the Microwave technique. Information technology's a bit stinky simply the stench dissipates Has anyone every done a bunch in ane shot though? I wonder if that'south hard on the microwave or anything? |
12-gauge shotgun + birdshot. |
Quote: Doesn't that just go far and then you tin't read certain files? Good luck trying to spin up such an unbalanced disc to really read it... For most personal situations, you don't actually need to totally destroy the data. It's frequently adequate to just make retrieval difficult. |
I just snap mine. |
I just snap them while holding them within a bag so shards don't go everywhere, and wear gardening gloves. |
For personal situations, IMHO, expert enough to make retrieval hard to deter a coincidental browser. If you are a business and accept customer personal data and particularly if HIPAA is involved then may make sense to rent Atomic number 26 Mount or similar service. |
I occasionally need to reassure a user that the disk containing sensitive information is going to actually be destroyed, so I have a cutting mat on the credenza behind my desk-bound and a utility knife and will only securely score the disk 3-iv times (cutting through the top of course) prior to dropping it into the designated burn bag. We recently got a small shredder that handles disks, but I don't look it to concluding long. |
Back when AOL discs were plentiful, I used them for pistol target practice. Mayhap not the virtually applied method, unless y'all're a shooter. But definitely the most fun. |
I don't know nearly the "easiest," just the "all-time" way to destroy them involves a Dremel with a conical grinding stone, a paved parking lot and a concrete wall/wood fence. Nigh CD'due south, spun up to Dremel speed and flicked off with a fingernail, will just shatter against the wall. You'll be amazed at the acceleration they display when they hit the pavement. The few which actually climb the wall and launch vertically skyward volition shatter when they descend, and brand for practiced video in the meantime. Oh, and wear vision protection. |
The answers in this thread make me worry that if I started a "What'southward the all-time kitchen trash butt?" thread, 90% of the answers would involve a trash trebuchet and 9% would involve burning all my trash in an enclosed room. |

The answers in this thread make me worry that if I started a "What's the best kitchen trash barrel?" thread, ninety% of the answers would involve a trash trebuchet and 9% would involve called-for all my trash in an enclosed room. You've visited The Lounge, aye? Well, there's a reason that people don't ask technical questions in the lounge. But this is 1 of the technical forums... |

You've visited The Lounge, yes? Well, in that location's a reason that people don't enquire technical questions in the lounge. Merely this is one of the technical forums... Don't forget, we're people who overclocked OG Pentiums and put motherboards in freezers for cooling.... |
I went through this a few years ago at home and recently at work, and by far the easiest way: take the open end of a pair of scissors and do 4 or 5 scrapes on the peak side of the disc, this will shred and turn vast swaths of the reflective dye layer into useless and messy flakes. If your really paranoid y'all can exercise the whole surface. It only took a few seconds to do each disc this way and much easier than trying to destroy the plastic. |
Brand sandwich of layers of CDs and nails (CD, 2 nails, CD, 2 nails, etc). Wrap with stretch wrap. Drive over it with vehicle. |

If your really paranoid you can do the whole surface. It only took a few seconds to practise each disc this way and much easier than trying to destroy the plastic. That method works splendid for CD-roms, only not for DVDs. With a DVD the data layer is glues between two plastic discs, you need to destroy the DVD. I accept a newspaper shredder that can eat the occasional disc. They are pretty though. |
Brand sandwich of layers of CDs and nails (CD, two nails, CD, ii nails, etc). Wrap with stretch wrap. Drive over information technology with vehicle. I'd merely exercise this if I was in the parking lot of a tire place and was going to replace my tire anyways. |
I pare mine apart - all the ones I demand to destroy are actually 2 thin layers sandwhiching the aluminum. I just pare them apart and the foil comes abroad, no scary plastic shrapnel and very satisfying... (I used to snap them, only the plastic shards shoot off in unpredictable directions) |
Glad I'm not the but one who finds CD/DVS fun to shoot at. Hard disk'due south are agreeable also to dispose of this way when you hang them from their interface cables. You lot can go more rounds into them this manner and get a more constructive execution. Seriously....I know a guy working in banking where they acid bath legacy DVDs and CDs. Y'all tin theoretically get information back from this cleaved media, but if the layer is dissolved even NSA snoops and an electron microscope can't recover it For less critical media he uses rough sand paper and can pretty much destroy the surface with a few rubs. |
What, no one suggested placing them in an oven? |
Practice that if yous want to, just I wouldn't use the oven for food afterward. |
Practice that if you want to, only I wouldn't use the oven for food afterwards. And you tin't use the house or part for living in since it'll be giving off cyanide gas while the plastic breaks down. |
What, no one suggested placing them in an oven? Okay, conspicuously a bad thought. And then if these were placed in a hot auto and warped, would you as well take cyanide fumes? |

You can theoretically go data dorsum from this broken media, but if the layer is dissolved fifty-fifty NSA snoops and an electron microscope tin't recover it For less disquisitional media he uses rough sand newspaper and can pretty much destroy the surface with a few rubs. information technology's fun.. merely it's also expensive. ammo is pricey present. |
What, no one suggested placing them in an oven? Okay, clearly a bad idea. So if these were placed in a hot machine and warped, would you likewise have cyanide fumes? Nope, information technology takes heat of combustion, not heat of deformation to break up the chemic bonds and release the cyanide compounds =) |
No love for PhotonicInduction? Not the easiest admittedly, simply way more fun. https://world wide web.youtube.com/watch?v=TlCCpCB-Gr4 |
